Welcome!

"Sway- the scattered forest of ancient trees: About a year go I started on a new project about trees that have been around for several thousand years. I had come to a point in my work with environmental issues where I wanted to engage in something positive and less gloomy than reports on climate change and found that really old trees could provide an interesting starting point for a discussion on resilience, sustainability and environment. On Wednesday, I will show some of this work, the bulk of which still is in progress; and also talk a little about alternate models of financing an art project and the artist as a tourist."

NON GRATA - Artist Talk

NON GRATA - Artist Talk Wednesday 16.1 at 15.30 PM
Lecture room at 4th floor (Allegro C B2 464 / Centria)

- Academia Non Grata professor Anonymous Boh & Devil Girl visits Novia with a presentation about performance group NON GRATA: ART OF THE INVISIBLES
NON GRATA - "ART OF THE INVISIBLES"

Around the name NON GRATA there have been different hushes and shushes for a long time. Already from the point of view of death of conventionalization of art it has embodied the horrible and unwanted disembodiment of human person, from which the meaninglessness of nowadays art, is pouring out. For those, whose world of arts starts from the point, where the art world ends, NON GRATA has been a liberator, the orphic gap in the seemingly unalterable course, which however betrays us, it is a cure from incest. The main point of the group is ethical - it is the image of primitivism, impersonality and experimental creativity. The performances of the group take place according to the logic of avoiding codes. The presentations are physical texts, whose ways of orthography and reading are kept within limits of real actions by the groupmembers. Aesthetical and provocative challenges are represented in places, where the Art World doesn't work.

Fresh AiR 4.12

Fresh AiR #1 (program in previous post) went underway on Tuesday 4.12. The seminar focused mainly on Artist Residencies in general together with their profiles, problems, problem strategies, solutions and other basic issues connected to this field of art and cultural practice. The talks was rounded up at the end of the day with a very interesting panel discussion that touched several important questions. However a lot of the topics was, not unexpected, left open without specific answers but then again one day of debate is merely an opening when sometimes complex matters are on the table.
Therefore the conference was also the first event in a planned continuous series of AiR-related seminars, talks and workshops. Fresh AiR conference #2 is preliminary planned to take place during the autumn 2013.

Sören Lillkung, Head of the Cultural department of Novia University of Applied Science (and Art), opens the Conference.

Christoph Tannert during his presentation of Künstlerhaus Bethanien
KB is one of the oldest and more established Residency Organisations with a well developed programme. The difference between various residency organisations and their profiles was one of the main topics in this first Fresh AiR edition and also a cause for further discussions.

Alessandra Pomarico of SoundRes talks about their program, profile and way of interacting with the local community. All the talks opened up for either ideas, confirmed thoughts and topics to consider and discuss within the field of international art projects and residency programs.

Ulrika Ferm presents Platform (Vasa). Platform is in terms of location and size comparable to AiR-Jakobstad but the profile is a different one.

At the end of the day some of the remaining questions and thoughts where discussed. The keynote speakers was joined by Sabina Westerholm of Pro Artibus and Albert Braun (Fine Arts, Novia) who moderated.

Anneli Holmstrom - Artist Talk

Artist Talk by Anneli Holmstrom
at Novia (Jakobstadsvägen 24, Nykarleby) Wednesday 21.2. 15:30

"Soundtrack to the lived and the Dying" Performance
Huntly Hairst Live Art Festival 2009.

Anneli Holmström (Edinburgh) has since January worked within the AiR-Programme of Nykarleby.
During autumn she was at the residency at Stundars (Solf) where she started a project called The Retreat which is a series of paintings based on interviews on the same topic - and/or recreation. This project is continued here in Nykarleby.
Recently she has also worked with paintings connected to texts written by author Carita Nyström. This has been exhibited in Vasa and now in Korsnäs.

Anneli works mainly with painting, performance and sculpture. Often with projects that contains more than one of those specific techniques/"genres".

From her website:

"In a modern world brimming with objects made to fulfill a specific function, my research takes me to question how 'function' or 'purpose' might be applied when considering human subjects. What are we made for? How to live? How to love? How to find home? and so on. Through art making, I seek to ultimately create an archive of works that explore these aspects of the purpose seeking self.

Just as there are countless ways to tell the same story, I like to experiment using different approaches of media, blending sculpture, film and performance into one art form. Through this process, I hope to compare the potentials and limitations of different art medias when documenting personal and collective history."
